Dr. Angela A. Fletcher

Dr. Fletcher is a clinical psychologist specializing in treating children, adolescents, and young adults with acute and chronic medical or other health-related conditions.

Dr. Fletcher specializes in treating the following: medical and health conditions, including headaches and gastrointestinal conditions, functional neurological disorders (FND)/non-epileptic seizures (NES), concussions, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS); Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), epilepsy, diabetes, sleep disorders, along with many other acute and chronic medical conditions.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Dr. Fletcher spent over 20 years training and working in various medical and hospital settings. She was the director of the Behavioral Pain Program for 12 years before transitioning to the Intractable Headache Program at Children’s National Hospital. She completed her internship at Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a postdoctoral fellowship at the pediatric pain rehabilitation inpatient and outpatient clinics. Dr. Fletcher holds a faculty appointment in the Division of Psychology and Behavioral Medicine at Children’s National and specializes in treating headache conditions, functional neurological conditions, gastrointestinal conditions, and functional neurological conditions.

TREATMENT APPROACH

Dr. Fletcher uses a holistic and skills-based approach to empower children and teens to conquer pain, anxiety, or mood symptoms and return to living. She believes “knowledge is power” and educates teens about the connection between their physical and emotional health. Dr. Fletcher believes collaboration is critical to improving the child’s daily functioning and works closely with the patient’s caregivers, schools, and other core providers of the child’s treatment team.

TREATMENT MODALITIES

As a clinical psychologist and behavioral scientist, Dr. Fletcher uses a variety of research-supported treatment techniques including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Pain-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (PF-CBT), Habit Reversal Training (HRT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Biofeedback Assisted Relaxation Training, and other mind-body modalities including mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR).
